Over 100 years of Eni's Historical Archive
Eni's archive patrimony tells the story of the oil and gas industry in Italy, from its beginnings in the Apennines of Emilia to its reaching the remotest places on earth, through documents, images and stories of the people who were there.
Eni acquires a share in IEOC (International Egyptian Oil Company)
Eni's collaboration with Egypt
When Eni was born in 1953, Italy was a country starved of oil and energy. The economy and the entire industrial sector were driven by reconstruction and a desire for Italy to get back on its feet. Beginning in 1946, Agip - the state agency that Enrico Mattei was instructed to dissolve - made several important discoveries in the Po valley. But these were mostly gas fields, and Italy needed oil too. At that moment in history, decolonisation was underway in Africa. Mattei's gaze was drawn to nearby Egypt, where he made a pact with President Gamal Abdel Nasser. It was there that Eni applied a new type of contract for the first time anywhere in the world. Known to posterity as the Mattei formula, it went on to revolutionise the relationship between oil companies and producer countries.

"Eni has utmost respect for its employees and their families, and it will do whatever it takes to ensure all the workers get the rest they deserve." (Enrico Mattei)
Summer camps
Cesenatico and Borca di Cadore are two excellent elements within the panorama of corporate welfare architecture. The seaside location Cesenatico was designed by architect Giuseppe Vaccaro and built at the end of the 1930s. The Borca di Cadore mountain facility was designed by architect Edoardo Gellner and constructed in the mid-1950s. Both were created to fulfil a social function for Eni Group employees and their families. The corporate holiday village in the Dolomite Mountains was made available to Eni employees at every level of the Company. All who went enjoyed a well-deserved break with their families in a dream-like location where everyone received the same treatment. These holiday villages are not only state-of-the-art architectural gems, for which we are quite proud, they are also tools and symbols of one big corporate family.

1992 - Eni transformation
The privatization of Eni
In 1992, with the decree-law n. 333 approved by the Amato Government, the privatization process of Eni began, which would see the company transform from a State entity to a joint-stock company. It was a gradual process that began in the 1990s, as part of a broad process of liberalization and privatization of public companies in Italy. Privatization contributed to an important change in the country's economy, with a shift to a more free-market-oriented model. With Franco Bernabè as CEO, a profound rationalization of Eni began, focusing the company on its core business and selling off activities considered non-strategic.
In 1995, the placement of shares on the market began. This activity would conclude in 1998 with the placement of 68% of the capital on the market.
