Enrico Mattei

The thousands of photos stored and digitalised in our archive tell the story of the legendary Enrico Mattei. There are family pictures from his early childhood and photos from when he fought as a partisan, took his first job at state-owned Agip and finally became Eni's founder and first chairman. We see him exploring the fields in Caviaga and Cortemaggiore with leading Italian politicians, intent on explaining the importance the discovery of methane would be for rebuilding Italy after the War. We go back in time to the inaugurations of service stations, refineries, methane pipelines, industrial plants, platforms and ships, all built by Eni. The photos also bear witness to when Mattei met with foreign heads of state and signed major contracts that in a matter of just a few years would lead his company to become a world leader in oil and gas.
