Research campaigns

In the mid-1950s, Eni signed its first contracts with Egypt and Iran, then went on to sign many more with other African countries. The 'petrol men' - geologists, seismologists, engineers, Eni operators - set out abroad on the first research campaigns. They stayed for months in countries on every continent, sleeping in desert camps, living side by side with people from new cultures, working in high temperatures. These were pioneer experiences, intense and demanding as well as thrilling. The challenge was to ensure the energy independence that Italy needed to take its place among the great world powers. The hundreds of photos taken by the people who were part of this mission show how enthusiastic they were about it. They have been collected in albums and kept for years, fostering nostalgia and pride
